How Local SEO Actually Works (No Jargon)

Most explanations of local SEO either drown you in jargon or oversimplify it into “just get more reviews.” Neither is very useful if you’re trying to decide what to actually spend time and money on. Here’s the plain version.

Three things decide your local ranking

Google’s local ranking comes down to three broad factors: relevance (does your business match what was searched), distance (how close you are to the searcher or the searched area), and prominence (how well-known and well-reviewed your business is, both online and off).

You can’t do much about distance. Relevance and prominence, though, are almost entirely within your control — and that’s where the work actually pays off.

Relevance starts with your Google Business Profile

Your categories, business description, service list and photos all feed relevance signals to Google. A profile with the default category and no service details is invisible next to a competitor who’s filled every field out properly. This is the highest-leverage, lowest-cost fix most businesses haven’t done.

Prominence is built, not claimed

Reviews matter, but so does consistent activity: regular posts, updated photos, and a website with matching, locally-specific content. Prominence compounds — it rewards businesses that keep showing up, not ones that set it up once and forget about it.

Where most businesses waste effort

Chasing generic, high-competition keywords (“plumber Melbourne”) instead of the specific, suburb-and-service combinations real customers search. A page built around “emergency plumber Richmond” will usually outperform a generic page trying to rank for all of Melbourne at once.
